Build Info

Software engineer focused on empowering teams to build the least amount of code that achieves human happiness.

Disclaimer

Everything in this site are opinions, my opinions, and none of them represent those of my current or previous employers.

Background

My name is Memo Sandoval – short for Guillermo in Spanish. I'm a Software Engineer by day and professional bug writer by night.

I earned my bachelor's degree from the National Technological Institute of Mexico, with studies roughly equivalent to Computer Science. I later pursued graduate studies in Cybertronics at La Salle University, completing 19 courses.

Boomerang'ed to Google in 2026, as a Site Reliability Engineer, after over a year at Duolingo, being responsible for Observability. Before that, I spent seven years at Google managing debug logging systems, log-based insights, and monitoring metrics storage. Earlier roles included DevOps engineering in market research, plus experience in financial services, communications, and healthcare sectors—spanning over 15 years total.

Philosophy

I am an engineer. I value 2 things above many: the ability to evaluate trade offs devoided of passion, and being capable of approaching problems from first-principles - lacking context and asking the necessary questions to debug production and organizations.

I do whatever the team needs me to do, yes, cheesy. While I like thinking about failure modes, distributed systems, CLI tools that improve engineering efficiency, agents that automate debugging, the truth is I like doing things that are important, and sometimes that comes in the form of coaching, planning, de-escalating conflict, listening.

I like people with all of their messiness. As humans we are complicated, we have personal interests, career goals, family affairs, good days and sad days; and unless you try extremely hard they all show up in a professional setting. I prefer to acknowledge our humanness, name the behaviors and incentives out loud and negotiate solutions. Not everyone is happy, but no one is ignored.

Experience Highlights

2026 - present

Engineering Manager @ Google

Lead on the SRE team for Payments at Google.

2025 - 2026

Senior Engineering Manager @ Duolingo

Led the Observability team, responsible for making the monitoring, alerting, triaging, and root-causing experience _just-work^TM_ out of the box. Launched initiatives on standardization of instrumentation and tooling, correlation and simplification of signals for faster incident response.

2018 - 2024

Software Engineer → Staff Engineer / Engineering Manager @ Google

Led engineering teams across Technical Infrastructure products including Monarch Time Series Repository, Error Reporting, and Debug Logs. Managed distributed systems handling ingestion of TB/s of data and 500k requests per second, launched regionalization of a product from global to run across 46 regions with zero negative customer impact.

2015 - 2018

Senior Software Engineer @ Critical Mix

DevOps engineering lead for market research platform serving 250-employee company. Designed automation framework creating 4 NLP-powered bots, launched survey programming and serving platform handling bursty traffic, and maintained project management tools supporting core business operations.

2014 - 2015

Software Engineer @ Grupo Bursatil Mexicano

Unblocked launch of Trading Pro application by independently creating responsive HTML component for real-time stock market data display after Microsoft Silverlight deprecation. Productionized proof of concept including test suite and documentation for team handover.

2009 - 2014

Software Engineer → Senior Software Engineer @ Baktun

Contractor primarily for Authentic Response (acquired by Critical Mix) in market research field. Built CRM with 3 contractors that scaled to support business requiring 10x the engineering headcount by 2018. Contributed to projects spanning VoIP, NAT traversal, unified communications, and SIP protocols.

Beyond Code

When I'm not in code-adjacent adventures I like learning about the universe, electronics of everyday consumer products, and patterns of human behavior.

I'm a fan of most things sci-fi, enjoyer of video games as a social activity.

What Keeps Me Interested

Building Tools for Engineers

Creating custom solutions like HTTP servers, deployment automation, and developer utilities. My users are my people and at the same time I'm never the same as my users. But I find joy in finding and getting rid of challenges shared by large groups of engineers.

Systems at Scale

Distributed systems handling large amounts of data, architectural patterns for reliability, and the engineering challenges of serving millions of customers.

Trends In Engineering

I like learning about new iterations of technology that attempt to make engineering simpler, more efficient, and more engaging. Learning takes the form of small experiments or reading.
